FAQ

Questions about text diff checker

How is the comparison calculated?

The two texts are compared line by line with a longest-common-subsequence diff, so a moved block is reported as one removal and one addition rather than as every line changing. Inside a changed line the diff is repeated word by word, which is why only the words that really changed are highlighted.

What is the difference between the two views?

Side by side puts the original and the changed text in two columns so you can read them as one document. Inline merges them into a single stream, where removed text is struck through and added text is underlined — the layout you want when you are reading a changelog.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The comparison runs in the page itself, so confidential drafts, contracts and code never leave your device. The two text boxes also accept a file from disk, which is quicker than pasting a long document.

Can I ignore formatting differences?

Yes. The comparison options can ignore whitespace changes and letter case, so a re-indented or re-capitalised document is reported as unchanged when that is what you care about.
